# What is a headless CMS? A plain-English guide

Journal — Platforms — 6 min read. Written by Ryan Milano, Design engineer.

A headless CMS is a place to store and edit your website's content that isn't tied to any one design. Your team writes content in one place, and your website decides how it looks.

## 01 Traditional vs. headless

A traditional CMS like WordPress, Squarespace or Webflow stores your content and controls how every page looks. The content and the design are welded together.

A headless CMS like Sanity, Contentful or Storyblok only handles content. A separate front end, built by your developer, displays it however your brand needs.

## 02 An everyday analogy

A traditional CMS is a food truck: the kitchen and the window you order from are the same vehicle. If you want a bigger dining room, you need a new truck.

A headless CMS is a central kitchen. It can serve a restaurant, a takeout counter and a catering van at once. Redesign the dining room and the kitchen keeps cooking.

## 03 Why it matters for your business

- **A faster website** — Modern front ends load quickly, which helps rankings and keeps visitors around.
- **Editing that can't break things** — Content goes into clear fields, so the design stays intact.
- **Redesigns without starting over** — Only the front end changes. Every page and post stays put.
- **No lock-in** — Content exports as clean data, and the site can be hosted anywhere.

## 04 Popular options

Sanity offers very flexible content modeling and a customizable editor. It's our usual pick for brands that want content shaped around how their business actually works.

Contentful suits larger teams with complex workflows. Storyblok has a visual editor with live preview that marketing teams love. All three pair well with Shopify for products and checkout.

## 05 Is it right for you?

It's a strong fit if your website is central to winning customers, you publish regularly, you plan to grow, or you've already hit the limits of a template builder.

It may be more than you need if you're just starting with a few simple pages that won't change much. Either way, your team edits day-to-day content without a developer.
